French book set leather binding and corners, Champy A. Framont no 23, marble edges "Jopesh" is the title par (author) Bitaube(1732-1808)-1797 print, tome Prima (1&2)Paul Jeremie Bitaube was a member of the Royal Academy of Sciences and belles-letters of Berlin. Important provenance as well, Published by Didot,Father and son, were one of the most famous dynasties in French printing history, renowned for luxury typography and high quality paper. sold only by 3 collective parisian book sellers back in the day (Garnery, dugour, Varin) this is a 6th edition,printed during the French revolutionary period. It is a dramatic, poetic retelling of the biblical story of Joseph, tracing his betrayl by his brothers , etc..The engravings are remarkable, and were originally sketched for the book, by clement-pierre Marillier the most prolific French book illustrator of the lat4e 18th century. the engraver was Francois Denis Nee, who etched each original then onto the copper printing(tiny)plates. The binding is full mottled calf leather with raised bands , with ornate gile-embossed spines and red title lables, typical to the late 18th century French bindings. there is some wear on the front and back but minor and slight foxing in the pages, but overall in rare great condtion.( market value with all factors up to $250)
