The French military cavalries operating in harsh field conditions adopted similar enclosed wooden stirrups-utilized for their heavy dragoon and scouting units. The 3 distinct 3 bar brass bottom configuration on this pair is known as a skid plate, so when cavalry riders dismounted onto mud , gravel or stonoe surfaces, the brass took the abrasive wear, keeping the structural wood underneath from cracking or splitting.
